This deeper pocket in the floor of the stream passage is a "plunge pool" that is located below a small waterfall and appears to collect water 1.5 meters deep. The bottom of the pool, like most of Snowy River, is somewhat porous as the water apparently drains quite quickly after the water flow stops.
