Decon SetupThis summary discusses how to set up the BLM Hot Water Decon unit. This portable unit was jointly designed and fabricated by the BLM and the FSCSP in 2016. Following the initial test at an FSCSP expedition, the unit was packed in a trailer and traveled to the 2016 NSS Convention in Colorado. The following year it traveled to the 2017 NSS Convention in Rio Rancho, NM. Since that time it has been used at Fort Stanton, Carlsbad, and other group caving meetings. |
Pick the proper decon tank for the optimum use of time and resources. The previous version of the AD5K unit used this smaller 90 gallon tank, which is not yet compatible with the portable propane heater shown here. |
Although this smaller tank appears to connect with the cart-mounted heater, it is missing the top and bottom foam insulation, the top cover grill, and the inside tank filter. Get access to the locked trailer from Knutt and unload the required parts. |
How to position the units: Locate the pair of plastic platforms in the trailer and position as shown to allow proper access. The wooden pallets are set up to one side so that the washing water does not cause a muddy area. |
The cooler water from the tank connects to the pump inlet, and the hot water from the heater tank connects from the "Y" connector to the other end of the tank. Make sure the white foam bottom insulation is under the tank. |
Check for minimum stress on the attached plastic pipes and quick-disconnects. Make sure to push in the pair of disconnect clamps on each fitting to minimize leaks. |
. |
Check your water supply for leaks and use the proper hose and fittings to connect the water fill hose, the high pressure pump inlet hose, and the hand sprayer hose. Fill the tank up to the red tank top structure so that gear will not float above the hot water. |
. |
As the water starts to fill the tank, unscrew the tank filter assembly and clean as required. It is important to remove the black plastic tankless water heater filter plug with the unit's 17 mm wrench and wash the mesh filter inside.
. | Once the tank has water covering the filter assembly the pump and the heater electronics can be pugged in to the white outlets. Check the two electronic thermometers for proper operation. |
. |
Strange displays may indicate a new CR2025 button battery is required. Use a voltmeter to verify the button battery has at least the nominal 3 volts. |
. |
The sensor for the black Taylor thermometer is positioned in the tank and shows when the proper temperature is reached. The white unit indicates the water heater temperature, and during startup it must be reset often when the heater cuts off. |
. |
Once the pump is running (its hidden under the white plastic cover) you should check for leaks. The hot water tubing is insulated with the gray foam. |
Usually the tank filter does a good job and small particles should not be seen in the transparent swirl filter. If this filter appears dirty, it can be flushed during operation by removing the black hose cap and opening the red handle valve. |
. |
Since we have "tricked out" the control temperature of the propane heater, you will need an "operator" to push the reset button on the white thermometer. Caution! 140 degree hot water can cause severe burns! |
When the insulated tank reaches the proper temperature, the mesh bags of gear can be introduced through the top hinged door. |
The drying racks located in the trailer should be set up away from the decon unit to provide easy access. |
After use, the AD5000 unit should be drained of water and properly stored. The tank, insulation, drying racks, hoses and other items can be stored in the trailer. |
Caution: Water will remain in the propane heater coils and when it freezes, severe damage will occur. It may be possible to blow out the water with forced air, but the factory instructions state that the unit should be plugged in so that internal heaters can minimize the interior water passages from freezing. At the Fort Stanton Field House the unit should be rolled into the lab room where the building is heated. The propane bottles should be returned to the outdoor propane storage area. |
